When I started in digital accessibility, I was part of a team tasked with making an airline eCommerce website accessible. Against a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandate, we had two years to accomplish this. The first year was spent primarily with grassroots efforts, while we worked on getting peer and executive attention and support. Sound familiar?
I want to discuss that grassroots, low-hanging fruit phase. You do not need to wait until you get support, get funding, or get executive support and approval. You don’t need to wait until you get vendor assistance, or a platform. Little things can help make great inroads into becoming more accessible than the day before, and aid in your growth in accessibility.
I am starting a series of articles, titled “Baby Steps Accessibility;” laser-focused on a particular task that will improve your digital product’s level of accessibility. The audience for these articles is everyone, however specifically those people new to digital accessibility, who haven’t a clue where to begin. We all have to start somewhere. What’s most important is to just start.
